Description

This char siu chicken is sweet, savory, and beautifully glazed in a classic Chinese BBQ-style marinade. It’s juicy, flavorful, and easy to make at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • to 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs

  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or Shaoxing wine

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • ½ tsp Chinese five-spice powder

  • Optional: Red food coloring

  • Garnish: Sesame seeds, green onions

Instructions

  1. Whisk all marinade ingredients in a bowl.

  2. Add chicken and marinate 1 hour or overnight.

  3. Roast at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 min, or grill 5–7 min per side.

  4. Broil or char in final minutes for a caramelized finish.

  5. Rest, slice, garnish, and serve hot.

Notes

Serve with rice or noodles. For more sauce, simmer extra marinade separately. Air fryer method works well too.
